Mohamed H. Jaffer - Chairman of the Board of Directors

Mr. Jaffer is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Grain Bulk Handlers Limited (GBHL), a grain terminal specialised in the discharge and handling of bulk grain imports at the Port of Mombasa.

GBHL is the brain child of Mr Jaffer over 30 years ago and to date it has become Africa’s largest grain terminal.

Mr Jaffer is also the Chairman of MJ Group of Companies. The MJ Group is specialized in establishing and installing cargo handling terminals with the latest state-of-art equipment, employing the latest management operational IT Solutions and Automation. The Group’s particular success has been in handling both Dry and Liquid Bulk Cargo. The Group’s reputation has attracted interest from outside countries and exporting its expertise overseas.

Mr Jaffer is the great grandson of Jaffer Dewji who was one of the Pioneers who came to East Africa in the year 1860. Ventured in various trades i.e. ship owners, bankers and merchants.  They were the first Bankers to His Majesty King George V and founder members of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and the founder of first Power & Lighting Company in Lamu.                 

He is an alumnae of John Hopkins University, college of Business Administration in Baltimore, U.S.A.

Mr Jaffer is a very active philanthropist through his Jaffer Foundation Charity Trust and is also a member of various major Golf & Country clubs in Mombasa.

In June 2000, Mr Jaffer was honored by the former President of Kenya – Daniel T. Arap Moi with a decoration of The Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S)

Jon Stokes - Finance Director

Jon is based in the company’s head office in Mombasa.  In his position as Finance Director he is responsible for directing financial policy for the company, including investment decisions, budgetary planning and performance.

Jon is also responsible for the statutory reporting of company results to stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with all statutory accounting requirements.

Prior to joining the company Jon held the position of Director of Projects for an international port consultancy company based in the UK.  In this role he was responsible for identification of investment projects from conception to implementation.

Jon holds a degree in Philosophy, Psychology & Physiology from Oxford University, is a chartered accountant (UK) and a CPA (Kenya).

Jon also is a keen golfer and a member of the Nyali Golf and Country Club where he is currently holding the position of treasurer.

Eng. David Walter Harris - Technical Director

From early on in his life, Engineer David Walter Harris of UK always had a technical spirit. He studied Electrical, Civil and Mechanical Engineering in England and has City and Guilds honours. He has worked in various companies, as well as countries, as an Engineer eg the port of Maputo in Mozambique, Saudi Arabia & Portia Management Services in the UK, where he was responsible for the supervision of engineering, maintenance & construction work at the terminals. This included Sugar and Grain Terminals, import and export, Container Terminals and their associated equipment.

Eng. Harris managed the construction of Grain Bulk Handlers Terminal in Mombasa as the Project Engineer from 1998, where he was responsible to financiers from IFC, CDC, & Proparco France. Upon completion of operations, Eng. Harris managed the maintenance and operations of the terminal, and currently holds the position of the Technical Director.

Mustakim Shivji - Transport and Warehouse Manager

Mustakim was born and schooled in Mombasa Kenya. Started working experience with a family based Ships Agency business where he gained considerable experience in port operations having handled a wide range from cruise ship operations, container vessels, general cargo dischargers to bulk vessels which were bringing grains & minerals, apart from liner trade also a number of vessels were also chartered.

Started career at Grain Bulk on commencement of the organisation as a supervisor rising through ranks to the present day postion as Terminal Manager. 

Shazeen Chatur - Company Secretary/Legal Officer

Shazeen Chatur joined GBHL in mid 2007 as the Company Secretary and Legal officer. An advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a solicitor by profession, she joins GBHL with relative experience in the areas and practice of law within the respective jurisdictions.

Shazeen also has also been appointed as a Company Secretary and Legal officer of MJ Group of Companies based in Mombasa.

She holds a degree in law from the University of Kent and a Certificate for completing a solicitor’s legal training from College of law, Store Street. Prior to joining GBHL she was an active working partner at the firm of Menezes, Oloo & Chatur Advocates, established and based in Mombasa and has worked in various law firms in the United Kingdom and Kenya.

Alice Wangu - Finance Manager

Alice is the Finance and Administration Manager of Grain Bulk Handlers Ltd (GBHL) responsible for implementing finance of the company and responsible accuracy and integrity of the finance books to the Board. 

She joined GBHL in December 2001 as a Finance Clerk and has participated in the growth of the company.

Alice is is a CPA finalist and a budding philanthropist and is currently broadening her experience and expertise by pursuing an International recognised MBA programme.

Michael L. Mwakamba - Operations Manager

Prior to joining GBHL operations team in the year 2000, Michael was a marine supervisor and rose through ranks to senior marine supervisor and then assistant operations manager with Mitchell Cotts Shipping Co. Ltd which later became Aseco (K) Ltd between 1990-2000.

During his shipping years, Michael had the opportunity of visiting various International Ports which included Campagne Maritime de Belge (CMB) of Belgium, Unicorn Shipping Company of South Africa, Antwerp, Hamburg, Felixtowe, Mumbai, Durban and Maputo.

Michael has over 20 years of wide experience in the Shipping and Marine industry.

Samuel N. Mwilu - Technical Manager

Sammy joined GBHL in 2000 as Senior Electrical Maintenance Supervisor responsible for the completion and test of all electrical panels and controls of the terminal.

In 2007 he was promoted to the position of Technical Manager which he holds to date.

Prior to joining GBHL, Sammy worked for Bamburi Portland Cement (now Bamburi Cement) for 17years as Plant Technician in charge of electricals.

Sammy holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Electronics.
