Mr. Jaffer is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Grain Bulk Handlers Limited (GBHL), a grain terminal specialised in the discharge and handling of bulk grain imports at the Port of Mombasa.
GBHL is the brain child of Mr Jaffer over 30 years ago and to date it has become Africa’s largest grain terminal.
Mr Jaffer is also the Chairman of MJ Group of Companies. The MJ Group is specialized in establishing and installing cargo handling terminals with the latest state-of-art equipment, employing the latest management operational IT Solutions and Automation. The Group’s particular success has been in handling both Dry and Liquid Bulk Cargo. The Group’s reputation has attracted interest from outside countries and exporting its expertise overseas.
Mr Jaffer is the great grandson of Jaffer Dewji who was one of the Pioneers who came to East Africa in the year 1860. Ventured in various trades i.e. ship owners, bankers and merchants. They were the first Bankers to His Majesty King George V and founder members of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and the founder of first Power & Lighting Company in Lamu.
He is an alumnae of John Hopkins University, college of Business Administration in Baltimore, U.S.A.
Mr Jaffer is a very active philanthropist through his Jaffer Foundation Charity Trust and is also a member of various major Golf & Country clubs in Mombasa.
In June 2000, Mr Jaffer was honored by the former President of Kenya – Daniel T. Arap Moi with a decoration of The Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S)
Mujtaba Jaffer - CEO
Mujtaba Jaffer was appointed C.E.O. of GBHL in March 2009; he has served on the board of Directors from 2006.
Prior to joining GBHL, Mr. Jaffer set up and run several businesses in the ICT Sector, in East Africa, UAE and the USA. He brings to GBHL over 15 years experience in Corporate Planning, Business Restructuring, Investment Management and IT Strategy.
Mujtaba holds a Bachelor of Computer Science and Finance degree from St. Johns University, in New York, and has had extensive management training in Africa, Europe, UK and USA.
MJ is an avid golfer, and plays volleyball in his spare time. He is also a member of various golf and country clubs in Kenya.
Jon is based in the company’s head office in Mombasa. In his position as Finance Director he is responsible for directing financial policy for the company, including investment decisions, budgetary planning and performance.
Jon is also responsible for the statutory reporting of company results to stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with all statutory accounting requirements.
Prior to joining the company Jon held the position of Director of Projects for an international port consultancy company based in the UK. In this role he was responsible for identification of investment projects from conception to implementation.
Jon holds a degree in Philosophy, Psychology & Physiology from Oxford University, is a chartered accountant (UK) and a CPA (Kenya).
Jon also is a keen golfer and a member of the Nyali Golf and Country Club where he is currently holding the position of treasurer.
Shazeen Chatur joined GBHL in mid 2007 as the Company Secretary and Legal officer. An advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a solicitor by profession, she joins GBHL with relative experience in the areas and practice of law within the respective jurisdictions.
Shazeen also has also been appointed as the Legal Director of MJ Group of Companies based in Mombasa.
She holds a degree in law from the University of Kent and a Certificate for completing a solicitor’s legal training from College of law, Store Street. Prior to joining GBHL she was an active working partner at the firm of Menezes, Oloo & Chatur Advocates, established and based in Mombasa and has worked in various law firms in the United Kingdom and Kenya.
Major (rtd) Abdulahi Yunis - Security
Manager
Major Abdullahi yunis (Rtd) joined GBHL in July 2009 as the Chief Security officer in charge of all security matters for MJ group of companies.
Prior to joining GBHL, Yunis is a well trained Air Force officer who rose from the rank of Cadet to Major. He is well trained in various fields including at the defense language college in Texas USA and also attended a course of supply Operations officers’ course at LOWRY air force base, Denver, Colorado USA.
Yunis was also seconded in 1993-94 as a military Observer under the United Nations in the former Yugoslavia where he gained massive experience in major operations including liaison, arranging cease fire agreement between factions, protection of VIPs and clearing of United Nations equipment and personnel in the once very volatile areas of SREBRENICA, GORARZDE, SARAJEVO and MORSTAR.
He is also a well trained officer in Fraud detection and investigation.
He also holds a diploma in management from college of professional management, New Jersey, UK.
Alan Rogers - Engineering
Manager
Alan was educated at The Kings Grammar School, Grantham where a certain Sir Isaac Newton attended, albeit a few years earlier! From an early age Alan was always interested in anything mechanical, and trained as an Apprentice Mechanical Engineer at a grain silo and animal feed manufacturer and obtained various City and Guilds honours. He worked his way up through the Engineering Department of the company until reaching the position of General Manager. Every spare minute away from work was spent first, as a race car mechanic, and later went on to driving and running his own race car. He spent some time in Canada working in the flour milling industry and in 2009 joined Grain Bulk Handlers as Engineering Manager. Alan is responsible for any upgrades and new projects which arise at GBHL.
He is also a keen musician, and has played as a guitarist in a number of bands in the UK.
Prior to joining GBHL operations team in the year 2000, Michael was a marine supervisor and rose through ranks to senior marine supervisor and then assistant operations manager with Mitchell Cotts Shipping Co. Ltd which later became Aseco (K) Ltd between 1990-2000.
During his shipping years, Michael had the opportunity of visiting various International Ports which included Campagne Maritime de Belge (CMB) of Belgium, Unicorn Shipping Company of South Africa, Antwerp, Hamburg, Felixtowe, Mumbai, Durban and Maputo.
Michael has over 20 years of wide experience in the Shipping and Marine industry.
